Fate Watson Jones, 93, a lifelong resident of Camden, Alabama, died at his residence on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. The funeral service will be Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at
the Camden Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church on Broad Street in Camden with the Rev. Rabun Williams officiating and Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home of Camden, AL directing. Burial will follow at the Camden City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. He was born on the family farm between Oak Hill and Camden in Wilcox County on August 17, 1925, to Paul Hines Jones and Juliette Watson Jones.
He graduated from Wilcox County High School in 1943, and attended the Citadel in Charleston, SC, before enlisting, at the age of 18, in the United States Army. He was stationed in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, and flew numerous missions over Europe as a tail gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress. He achieved the rank of Staff Sargent and later Captain in the Reserves.
He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1950 and was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Order. After college until retirement, he was a 35-year employee of Liberty National Life Insurance and a tree farmer and cattleman in both Wilcox and Greene counties.
He was a member of the Camden Exchange Club, helped establish the Good Samaritan Club, and was a lifelong member of the Camden Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where he served on its Session as an elder.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Anne Minor Jackson Jones, his sister Taylor Jones Harper, and his brother William Clarke Jones. He is survived by his son Brockway Jackson Jones (Anne), three grandchildren Daniel William Jones, Thornton Watson Jones, and Susannah Royce Jones, all of Tuscaloosa, nephew Jacob Calhoun Harper (Pam) of Camden, nieces Juliette Harper Bullock (Robert) of Oak Hill, Rose Harper Snell (Norman) of Birmingham, Martha Taylor Jones (William Hutton) of Williamsburg, VA, Nancy Jones Hess (Leonard) of Sand Point, Idaho, Susan Jones Luce (Greg) of Mobile, and first cousin Arthur Rivers Taylor (Estelle) of Demopolis.
Pallbearers are Max Baggett, Jo Bonner, Ricky Jones, Donny McLeod, Bryant Pearson, and Chuck Tait. Honorary pallbearers are Haas Strother and Sam Woodson.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sumpter Blackmon, Willie Ann Kennedy, Betty Mack, Amanda Marsh, Clastine McNeil, Wynette Shine, and Comfort Care Hospice.
